Important Points to Practice For Practical Test

1. Visual test can see and read number plate up 7 car lengths.

2.Show me and Tell me questions.

3.DSSSM ie doors,seat include head restraint,back rest,steering,seatbelt,mirrors.

4.Handbrake,gear in neutral then switch engine on.

5.Your use of steering 10-2 or 9-3 hands position and push and pull method,no hands off wheel or allow to spin, slide hands.

6.Use of gears and eco driving 2nd to 4th, 4th to 2nd, 3rd to 5th, 5th to 3rd

No steering and gearing. Change gears on straight parts of road before or just after the bend, roundabouts exception as necessary.  Modern engines can handle wider speed ranges with gear so match your speed to gear before changing gear ask yourself can you still use existing gear.

7.Use of brake not braking sharply brake smoothly.

8.Use of gas not to much apply light pressure.

9.Use of clutch not using it smoothly and not keeping foot on to long when not needed count ,1,2,3 and get your foot off clutch when not in use.

10.POM (Prepare pedals, Observations 5 point check from left shoulder, Move off decide on signal).

11.Find a SCALP (safe, convenient, and legal, place) before you pull up avoid driveways, busy junctions etc use MSM decide on signal

12.MSM (mirrors signal manoeuvre)

13.MSPSGL( mirrors,signal position,speed,gear,look start  routine from 10 car lengths, use white hazard line as a car length mirrors 10/8, signal 8/6,position 6,speed 4,gear 2,look 2/1.

14.Use LADA (look, assess.decide, act) can apply MSPSGL and LADA to all junctions.

15.Read-up Highway code again and know all rules of road, how to deal with all types

of junctions, anticipation skills.

16.Use commentary i.e. talk about what you are doing keep repeating until you achieve

standard, read the road with eyes and talk about your action.

17.No short cuts follow the structure.

18.Speed at junctions when turning left or right 10mph.Position when turning right near hazard white line, use door mirror over hazard line.

19.Position when turning left and position when going straight and your normal driving position from kerb is 1metre use drain width to measure.

20.Observations at junctions if doubt wait need to be 100% and judgement of speed look for gaps in traffic not cars. Use judgement as pedestrian crossing road but at major roads when crossing 2 lanes it will be different judgment call based on speed of road and gap on both sides.

21.Reverse manoeuvres equal balance of observation, accuracy, control,do not glue eyes to mirror, pause and observe, snail speed, quick with hands slow with feet.

Use your reference points to help you keep your accuracy.

22.Use you senses effectively open side window to hear traffic.Use mirrors effectively

not  just a habit.

Spend a second pause to ensure act on information.

23.Interior mirror uses are  when braking, in new road, when changing gear,on approach to all crossings,in pairs when changing speed or directions(MSM)

Door mirrors always used in pairs with interior when change speed direction and includes passing parked vehicles.

24.If you are in the middle of road and delayed make sure you check your interior and right shoulder before you move off as other drivers will attempt to overtake you. 25.You need to anticipate this behaviour and deal with all types of drivers as a safe driver.

26.Do not forget blind spots are as equally important, must be chin over that shoulder and effective check. Covering any potential cyclist overtake.

27.Prepare for the weather ensure you know what precautions to take and

safe distance and braking procedures.

28.Dual carriage way 70mph . When national speed sign displayed  on a single lane speed limit is 60mph, more common on country lanes.

29.Use Signs on road to help act safely on the road that’s why they are there?

If you do not see the sign how will know? What speed? What lane to use?How to act?

30.If in doubt confirm with the examiner early so that you know exactly where you

need to go?  If no instruction provided you are still proceeding straight again do not guess route ask and repeat back to examiner.  If you make a mistake on direction examiner will carry on so do not think you have failed it is not normally marked examiner will still carry on until test ends so fix you mistakes do not say out aloud i failed as you may have only incurred a minor fault.

31.1 in 3 candidates will get emergency stop.

32.You will be expected to carry out at least 2 manoeuvres.

33.Emergency stop is not a manoeuvre exercise and requires no mirrors, just brake,

clutch, handbrake neutral. Prepare car both blind spots first left then right move if safe.

34.Remember your road position at all times must adhere to markings and no bus lanes or cycle lanes unless times dictate.

35.Anticipation of all others road users cyclist, pedestrians, cars, buses, contractor vehicles are not the ones tested its you who needs to deal each situation safely so drop your speed, increase your gap ahead and allow time to think and act do not rush in and make last second decisions.

36.Overtaking Is it safe? Is it necessary? Is it legal? ask the 3 questions before you decide.  Ensure you keep a good distance from buses and other larger vehicles as you can not see over them and they will not see you as you will be in their blind-spot.  What signal can you see reverse lights, indicators, arm signals?  Keep 2m gap when overtaking cyclist.

When you are overtaking a moving vehicle make sure you signal and make sure you cancel again will depend on road condition.

YOU ARE ASSESSED ON WEATHER AND ROAD CONDITION ON THE DAY OF TEST AND NEED TO DRIVE SAFELY AT ALL TIMES.

IF YOU TO DRIVE TO DSA STANDARD YOU WILL PASS!
